The play
The play is a theatrical tour de force exploring the darker side of human nature and haunted by a sense of isolation and regret.
Set in the American South in the early 1930s Suddenly Last Summer is the starkly told story of Catherine who has seemingly gone insane after her cousin, Sebastian, the indulged only son of Mrs. Venable, a wealthy woman of influence, is killed in grisly circumstances on a trip to Europe.
In an exhausting heat wave on the terrace of Mrs. Venable’s garden, the play explores Sebastian’s legacy and the harrowing recollections of his ghastly death in Spain.
Mrs. Venable is keen to protect her son’s memory and attempts to have Catherine and her vivid recollections silenced by paying for her to have a lobotomy. It is typical Tennessee fair!!
