The play
The Memory of Water is a powerful and funny play about three sisters.
Mary (a doctor), Teresa (a business woman), and Catherine (a free spirit), return to their family home in Yorkshire on the eve of their mother’s funeral. When they meet, grief causes the conflicts and memories of the past to re-emerge. The result is a roller-coaster of emotions, veering from the darkly dramatic to the wryly humorous. As the sisters reacquaint with each other, hidden secrets are revealed through laughter and sorrow.
Shelagh Stephenson won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy in 2000 for this, her first stage play. It has been made into a film under the title of Before You Go.
