The play
There is a plot afoot which threatens to poison the entire British tea supply and there is only one man who can defeat arch enemies Marta Heartburn and Baron Scarheart. That man is the clean-cut, patriotic gentleman Dick Barton. In an ingenious new musical play, a tongue in cheek homage to an iconic detective, Phil Willmott brings to life a character loved by many in the 1940’s. Even if you were not one of the estimated 15 million listeners who, between October 1946 and March 1951, tuned in each evening to follow BBC’s first ever radio serial, you will enjoy meeting Dick Barton, Jock and Snowy in this new adventure. It’s a feast of song and laughter to warm a cold November evening.
In the words of Chris Isaac (alias Jock)
Dick Barton was something different, something challenging.
Not just walking around saying words.
There was dance, song, colour, humour and some geniunely touching moments.
Those of us who worked on this show had FUN, and this,I believe, transfered itself to the audience.
They loved it!
They laughed, applauded, there were even cheers and ahhh’s.
Those of us who were not singers learnt that we did have a voice, and although are never going to appear at La Scala, we were genuinely proud of our achievements.
My thoughts on the plays we put on are too strong for some, but I really believe that in these times of recession people need taking out of themselves and given value for their money.
The talent in and now involved in the STAC is not in doubt, what is, is the opportunity for this talent to be seen, given the some would call “conservative” choice of plays and occasional vanity projects.
There are a growing number of the membership who are crying out to try new things, reach out to new audiences. There have been several attempts made and we still knock at the door.
Please lets do more stuff like “Dick Barton”, “Bouncers”, “Ladies Day”,”Closer”, “Popcorn” etc etc.
We need to find the next generation of regular theatregoers and keep the pool of talent that gave you “Dick Barton”
And we need the membership to get out there and if they enjoyed a show, go out and sing its praises to all not just friends and family.
“Dick Barton” was a joy, not worthy, not deep and meaningful, joyful, and the audience loved it.

And Chris Broadfield (Dick/Snowy) says ”It was fun show – nice to do a play with a bit of music and tap. Thankfully, the play was a spoof so we could get away with murder!”
