Auditions for Day of Reckoning

by Pam Valentine
to be directed by Pauline Lowe

Auditioning Sunday 28th March 2010
2:30 pm in the Swan Theatre Foyer

Showing Tuesday 24th to Saturday 28th August 2010
at the Swan Theatre Studio, Worcester

The Play The summer fete committee of a typical British village meets on a cold January night to discuss arrangements for that year’s fete. As committee protocol gives way to bickering and gossip, we begin to see the personalities of those present. Thus the tip of the iceberg is presented, but it is during and after the fete, that the secrets and agendas of “ordinary” people unravel. Much has happened to everyone six months on and not all of it predictable! The cathartic events of the fete are related with humour and pathos and the upbeat ending affirms the enduring value of village life.

This rather special play of contrasts, is to be Pauline’s first “stab” at directing for STAC

Cast: 1 male and 7 female

Ethel Swift (middle-aged ) A country woman who knows everything about everyone.

Angela Brownlee (20’s) The “shy” infant school teacher – new to the village.

Mavis Partridge (elderly) An elderly character who chooses when to be observant and when to play senile.

Sally Martin (40’s) A brisk, well-groomed Army wife – has had an affair with the vicar.

Gloria Pitt (middle-aged) The honorary Secretary of the committee. Exhausted by caring for her elderly mother.

Pauline Morris (50’s) The vicar’s long suffering wife

Marjorie Organ (30’s) Breezy and outspoken. A rather “horsey” woman who is very attentive to the new teacher.

Geoffrey Morris (50’s) A vicar whose faith is in question and who enjoys more than his share of communion wine!

The ages of the characters are as described by the author, but we should be able to have some minor adjustments here and there, as long as we maintain a balance. They are all wonderful “character parts”.

The action takes place in the present day andf the location is an old time rural village hall.

Backstage crew will also be required for this production.

Scripts can be borrowed for four days only from Bygones by the cathedral (open 9:30-5:30 Mon-Sat except 1-2pm Sat). Scruipts MUST be returned by 26th March or brought to the audition.

If you would like to audition but cannot make the date please email contact@stac-worcester.com or contact Pauline directly.

Auditions for Caught In the Net

by Ray Cooney
to be directed by Andrew Dunkley

Auditioning Sunday 21st February 2010
2:30 pm in the Swan Theatre Studio

Showing Tuesday 20th to Saturday 24th July 2010
at the Swan Theatre, Worcester

The Play The sequel to Run For Your Wife finds our bigamist taxi-driver, John Smith, still keeping both his families (one in Wimbledon and one in Streatham) happy and blissfully unaware of each other. However, his teenage children – one girl and one boy by each wife—have met on the Internet and are determined to see each other in person, especially as it transpires that they have so much in common – same surname, taxi-driver dad of the same age, ETC !! When it dawns on John that they are about to meet, he plunges into a hell-hole of his own making in order to keep them apart. His savior could be Stanley, his lodger. Stanley is about to go on holiday with his decrepit old father, who turns up thinking he is already at the guest house. The ever-spiraling situation gets increasingly out of hand as John busts a gut to juggle with the truth.

This is a comedy/farce which will be a fast paced energetic play especially for John and Stanley.

Cast: 4 male and 3 female

John Smith, playing age 40-50. Taxi driver fairly strong Cockney/London accent

Mary Smith : John’s wife in Wimbledon playing age 40-50. Housewife, London accent

Barbara Smith. John’s wife in Stratham, playing age 40-50 Housewife London accent

Vicki Smith. John and Mary’s daughter playing age 15/16, Schoolgirl London accent

Gavin Smith. John and Barbara’s son playing age 16/17 College student London accent.

Stanley Gardner. John and Mary’s lodger playing age 40-50 “a good soul but not overly bright”

Dad. Stanley’s dad, playing age 70-80 – fluctuates between senility, alertness

Ideally we would like the two children to be played by someone 18+

Scripts can be borrowed for four days only from Bygones by the cathedral (open 9:30-5:30 Mon-Sat except 1-2pm Sat).

If you would like to audition but cannot make the date please email contact@stac-worcester.com or contact Andrew directly.

As always a full crew is needed, and it would be great if you could attend the audition to discuss how you would like to participate with the production.

Despite only seven people (all committee members) turning up this proved to be a useful and productive evening. We are looking for input from more members and would like to hear from anyone with play suggestions. We would also like to hear from anyone who would like to direct a play for us or learn to direct.

Special thanks go to Keith for contacting other companies and finding out which plays which have proven popular over recent years.
